Well, I’m sure you might have heard about this term ‘Wireless Charging’ before, but do you know how does it work? Is it really 'wireless'? And what is the future for this cool feature!? (Oh, future-feature, see what I did there?)
First of all, though the name says ‘Wireless Charging’, it is not completely ‘wireless’, it’s not like you can keep your smartphone where ever you want and it starts to charge, well not yet though, maybe in the future. With the present wireless charging technology, you no longer need to plug any cable into your smartphone to charge it. You conveniently place your device in a charging mat or pad, and boom there you go, your smartphone starts charging. But how? Before that, a fun fact for you guys, do know this whole wireless charging thing is a century-old technology, yeah you heard that right, almost 100 years ago, a guy named Nicola Tesla, an intelligent dude we must agree, well, he proved that power can be transferred from here to there without connecting them with any wire or something, so yeah, kudos to him and let’s move on now.
How it works?
As I said before, it works by transferring the energy from the charger to the receiver, which in this case is any smartphone enabled with wireless charging. Basically, there are two coils, one in the charger and other in the smartphone. When the charger is powered, the coil in that thing, creates an electromagnetic field around it, because that’s what it does, and the receiver coil in the smartphone, when kept nearby, coverts the electromagnetic field produced back into electricity, because again, it’s what it does, so the converted electricity is used to juice up the battery.

Drawbacks
I won’t say it has a lot of disadvantages, but nothing is perfect, so there’s that. As I mentioned before, the charger and the device should be in close proximity, so you cannot keep the charger in one corner of the room and the smartphone in another, and expect your smartphone to wirelessly charge somehow, well we’re not yet there, and the coils should be oriented perfectly for efficient charging, and one more, you cannot use your device conveniently while charging it this way, which some of us do, while charging in the conventional manner. So, these are some constraints regarding wireless charging.
The Future!
Coming to the future of the technology, it is all about the distance, how far can we keep the charger from the receiver and yet manage to charge the device in an efficient manner. Well, imagine this, you enter a room, switch on this imaginary wireless charging thing, and every device in the room starts to charge wirelessly, it can be in your bag or maybe it is in your pocket or chances are you are using the smartphone, but it doesn’t matter, where it is or how it is, it starts to charge wirelessly, that’s something right!?
To dig in deeper, there is this thing called Qi technology, Wattup technology and all sort of things. But these are some basic information about wireless charging, its current drawbacks and about what the future holds for us regarding this.
